Why Do You Need a Water Filtration System Tustin?

If you have made it to this page of our website, it is likely already know some of the benefits of a water filtration system. However, we wanted to take a few moments to discuss the importance of a water filtration system and the kind of contaminants that are found in local water sources.

Lead – We have all heard about lead in our water supply a lot more over the last couple of decades in part due to the water crisis in Flint Michigan. The case in Flint was particularly bad because the water being pumped through the pipes did not have anti-corrosion treatment. Flint is certainly not the lonely place in the United States that has lead in its pipes. Lead pipes were banned from new projects as of 1986. However, all pipes that were already underground did not have to be removed despite clear evidence of what lead exposure could cause. What is even more shocking is that plumbing fixtures could be labeled lead free if less than 8% of their total weight was lead. Finally in 2014 that law changed to only allow .25% of total weight to be lead. Even with anti-corrosion agents being used in pipes, all pipes age. Every pipe will eventually start to break down and lead will leach into your water supply. There are so many pipes that carry your water between the water treatment facility and your property that the only way to test for lead is at the final destination of the water. The EPA requirements for lead testing are not as stringent as you might think. They only have to test 50 properties every three years to be compliant. Additionally, buildings like schools only have to be tested if testing is requested. Some reports have shown that the EPA acknowledges that their lead testing protocols are not up to par. Lead can cause serious health issues such as kidney damage, brain damage, anemia, nervous system damage and more. Lead even has the ability to pass from a mother to a child in the womb. There is no question that lead is extremely dangerous. A high quality water filtration system will be able to remove contaminants like lead from your water. Call us if you have any questions regarding your water or whole house water filtration systems.

PFAS – There is a category of water contaminants referred to as emerging contaminants. These are contaminants in which are not currently regulated by the EPA. PFAS fall into the category of emerging contaminants. Studies have found that PFAS can lead to cancer, thyroid disorders, and a whole host of other serious health problems. Despite evidence that these chemicals found in a large number of products can harm people, they are still found in water sources. Once the EPA has finalized standards on a specific contaminant, it can take 3-5 years for those standards to go into effect. What does that mean? It means that once studies have shown that there is a contaminant in your water and conclusive evidence shows that it is harmful, it can take a full 3-5 years before it starts being removed from your water. You can expect more contaminants to be found in your water over time considering the all the goods that are being manufactured with potential toxic materials.

Chlorine – Chlorine and ammonia (chloramines) are used to treat water for contaminants. They are highly effective at killing parasites that can be found in water. However, not all of the chlorine and ammonia are filtered out before the water leaves the water treatment facility. The amount of chloramines in the water, are below the limit set by the EPA. It is stated that there are no short term effects of from the consumption of chlorine or ammonia in small quantities. However, some studies have linked long term consumption of chlorine in water to rectal, bladder, and breast cancers. Whole house water filtration systems will filter contaminants out of all the water that enter your home.

Other Contaminants – There are a large number of other toxic contaminants that are becoming more prevalent in water sources. Hexavalent Chromium (Chromium Six) is one that has been found in recent years within Orange County and is incredibly dangerous. You cannot rely upon the local water municipality alone to filter out contaminants. A whole house water filter is essential to keeping your water safe for consumption.
